Testimonies from mid-west Nepal show heavy impacts of climate change

Posted on 09 September 2009

In Surkhet District, in the mid-western region of Nepal, people provide their testimonies on how the changing climate is affecting their lives.

Many people in this community have been forced to move to India to search for work, since the changing weather patterns have forced them to stop farming. In the dry season there is not enough rainfall for the crops to grow and there is not enough drinking water to supply the community. During monsoon, the rains are so heavy that everything is flooded, and the crops are rendered useless. This region is facing health issues such as diarrhoea, since they are forced to drink dirty and contaminated water. When they used to be able to harvest enough food for 7-8 months, now the same harvest will only sustain them for two months.

These testimonies show how climate change is having a huge impact on people in developing countries, such as Nepal
